Silver technology

more than 10 years experience

Preserving with human compatible preservative

What started over 15 years ago in the field of process fluid development has found its way via various veterinary products into our natural cosmetics.

Silver is ideal for making e.g. Water to keep for a long time. This was already used in ancient times. Even our grandmothers knew how to help themselves with the silver coins of the time.

Today, mainly sailors and outdoor enthusiasts use products containing silver ions (e.g. MicroPur) to preserve their drinking water.
In this process, the silver ions (Ag+) act according to the “oligodynamic principle” or the ‘oligodynamic effect’(►link).

What even has positive effects for humans, prevents microorganisms from growing already in the ppm (parts per million) range.

Preservative solution

free from badstuff

Silver is a human-compatible, skin-friendly, non-irritant preservative and is optimally tolerated by our skin. In conventional cosmetic products, substances are often used for preservation that are harmful and toxic to humans and the environment. By using silver, we can completely replace conventional and harmful preservatives such as any parabens, potassium sorbate, phenoxyethanol and many others in our cosmetic products and thus omit them.

Mode of action of silver

Microscopic images of coliform germs

We were able to demonstrate that even at the lowest concentrations (<5ppm) the metabolic activity of microorganisms in complex process fluids is drastically reduced.

Phase contrast image: All cells visible.

Superposition of two fluorescence images. Yellow-glowing E.coli / red-glowing coliform germs.

Superimposition of fluorescence image with phase contrast: living cells glow red.

The fluorescent gene probe signals reflect the physiological state of the bacteria present. The more active a bacterium is, the more target sites (rRNA) are in the cell and the more gene probes (fluorescently labeled oligonucleotides) can bind in the cell. The brighter the detected cell appears under the fluorescence microscope. The intensity of the detected signal, allows conclusions to be drawn about the metabolic activity of the bacteria.

Omit parabens and other toxins

And this is the good news!

By using the smallest amounts of our silver, we are in the fortunate position to be able to consistently omit all conventional preservatives such as potassium sorbate, benzyl benzoate, sodium and potassium benzoates, phenoxyethanol, phenoxypropanol or any parabens.

Silver ions act very efficiently against all microorganisms, whereby resistances are not known, since silver ions “attack” the microorganisms via different mechanisms of action. However, it is not sufficient to add pure silver ions, because these would immediately react with chlorides or oxygen and form poorly soluble, ineffective salts.

Preservative solution

A thousand advantages – one disadvantage

However, silver ions have a small disadvantage. If our products are left open in the sun for too long, you will see a slight discoloration. This is because the silver ions are reduced to elemental silver, reacting with their matrix. However, this reaction is absolutely unproblematic and certainly acceptable if we can do without all preservatives in return.
